Melovance practice guide
Start MIDI piano practice on macOS or Linux
Melovance turns MIDI piano performance data into focused feedback for your next attempt. This guide walks through the desktop practice loop, from choosing your download to using your first recommendation.
1. Choose the download for your computer
Open the Melovance download page and choose the available macOS or Linux release that matches your computer. Install or open the downloaded application using the instructions for that release. The Windows version is coming soon.
Have a compatible MIDI keyboard ready. Melovance needs MIDI note data for performance feedback. Recording an acoustic piano through a microphone or connecting a keyboard’s headphone output does not supply that MIDI data.
2. Connect your keyboard and select the input
Power on the keyboard and connect its MIDI data output to your computer using a compatible connection. Some keyboards connect directly over USB; other setups need a MIDI interface. Follow the keyboard or interface manufacturer’s instructions for any required drivers or power supply.
In Melovance, open Settings → Instruments and select the keyboard’s MIDI input. Play a few notes and check that the app responds before starting your session.
3. Play a manageable passage
Choose a lesson or practice passage and complete an attempt. Start with a passage you can repeat comfortably: the aim of the first session is to understand the connection and feedback, rather than to finish a difficult piece.
Melovance can use note matches, timing, note duration, early releases, and velocity differences to help identify what needs attention. Hand-specific feedback depends on the results available for that attempt.
4. Use one recommendation in your next attempt
Read the focused improvement and follow the suggested passage, tempo direction, or drill. Work on that goal, then try again. Keeping a clear goal makes it easier to notice whether the next attempt improves.
One analysis is generated after one completed practice attempt. The Free plan includes a daily allowance; see the current pricing section for each plan’s limit. Daily practice analysis limits reset every day.
If the app is not receiving notes
Check power and cables, confirm that your connection carries MIDI data, and select the input again in Settings → Instruments. If the input is missing, consult the keyboard or interface manufacturer’s compatibility and driver instructions for your operating system.
When contacting support, include your operating system version, keyboard model, app version, connection method, and what you see in the instrument settings. These details help distinguish an app issue from a connection or device issue.
